Obstructive sleep apnea (also known as OSA) takes place when the patient’s airway becomes partially or fully obstructed as they sleep. As a result, oxygen is unable to reach the body and the patient’s brain must send out an emergency signal that awakens them briefly so they can readjust and start breathing once more. These apnea instances tend to last only a handful of seconds, but they’re likely to happen over and over and over again throughout the night, robbing you of the deep sleep you need to function. Common symptoms of sleep apnea that patients need to be aware of include the following:

How Do You Treat Sleep Apnea?

If you’ve been diagnosed by your general physician or a sleep specialist with mild to moderate OSA, you’re an ideal candidate for oral appliance therapy! This device feels very similar to a mouthguard, and the patient should wear it every night. Once in place, the appliance will comfortably reposition the jaw and/or tongue so the airway obstruction you regularly experience no longer happens. Many patients prefer oral appliance therapy to traditional CPAP machines because they’re small, easy to use, quiet, and easy to travel with. Just imagine – a full night of uninterrupted rest that ends when you wake up feeling ready for the day ahead.
