What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are perhaps the most common metal-free restoration we offer. They sit completely over the top of a damaged or decayed tooth. We utilize dental crowns to replace damaged tooth structure, protect root canal treated teeth, and we can even utilize metal-free dental crowns as part of cosmetic dentistry plans.

The improved appearance of metal-free dental crowns is the main reason why people choose ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, or zirconia dental crowns rather than metal or gold restorations. These quality restorations closely resemble your healthy smile, and they look and function just like your natural smile. In addition to maintaining a natural appearance, ceramics and other metal-free materials are also less likely to cause irritation or sensitivities that can occur with metal restorations.

What is the Metal-Free Restoration Process?

Like dental restorations crafted from other high quality materials, patients need to visit our dental office twice to complete the restoration process. At your first visit, we begin by removing any damaged tooth structure and shaping the tooth in preparation for the placement of your dental crown, bridges, or other restorations. Then, we capture impressions that are used by our dental lab to craft the fixed bridge. Before you leave, we’ll place a temporary restoration to protect your prepared teeth. When we receive the final restoration from the lab, you’ll return for your second visit. At this shorter appointment, we’ll simply remove your temporary and replace it with a custom crown, bridge, or other restoration.

Do I Need to Care for My Smile Differently?

You will still need to care for your smile with regular tooth brushing and flossing, but we may encourage you to switch to softer toothbrushes and less abrasive toothpaste to avoid excessive wear. We may also recommend you use a waxed floss as more fibrous flosses can tug around the edges of your restoration. If you experience nighttime teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), be sure to wear a mouthguard to protect your restoration. If you participate in athletic events where your smile can come in contact with other players, hard surfaces or sports equipment, you should be sure to wear a mouthguard during these events as well. When possible, avoid bad habits like chewing on ice or other hard objects and don’t use your teeth to open packages.
