Stop Gum Disease with a Deep Cleaning

Did your dentist recently detect the early stages of gum disease during a routine visit? They recommended you undergo scaling and root planing in North Central San Antonio to stop the spread of the infection. Also known as a deep cleaning, the procedure removes harmful tartar accumulations from below the gum line. At Legacy Dental SA, our team takes the time to carefully clean your teeth to save your smile from the damages of gum disease.

Why Do I Need a Deep Cleaning?

patient with gum disease

Gum (periodontal) disease is a preventable infection that affects at least 50% of adults in America. Poor oral hygiene habits cause plaque and tartar to build around the gum line. Over time, the bacteria found in the accumulations irritates and infects the gingival tissue. This causes it to become red, inflamed, and bleed. Pockets from between the teeth and the tissue, trapping additional bacteria and tartar.

If the buildup is not removed right away, it destroys the supporting structures of your teeth. This can lead to tooth loss. The bacteria responsible for the infection can also enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, and other health concerns.

Your dentist in North Central San Antonio performs the scaling and root planing treatment to remove the buildup from the gingival pockets. This allows your tissue to reattach to your teeth to seal out additional tartar and bacteria to stop the complications of the infection.

The procedure is actually comprised of two separate treatments that work together to reinstate a healthy smile. In some cases, it may require more than one appointment to treat your whole mouth.

We may use a local anesthetic to minimize any sensitivity or discomfort you may feel during the treatment. Your dentist uses a special dental tool to carefully remove plaque and tartar from the root surfaces of your teeth just below the gum line. Once the gingival pockets are thoroughly cleaned, another dental instrument is used to smooth the roots. This helps to prevent future build up while allowing the tissue to reattach to your teeth.

Maintaining a Healthy Smile

Depending on the severity of the infection, we may recommend you undergo periodontal maintenance cleanings, which are needed about every 3 to 4 months. This allows us to keep your teeth clean to protect your gum tissue from reinfection. Besides visiting our office for periodontal therapy, we also recommend:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each session using a soft-bristled toothbrush and tartar control toothpaste.
  • Use a high-quality dental floss to clean in between each tooth and around the gum line daily.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco.
  • Do not drink alcohol in excess.
  • Ask your dentist about using an antimicrobial mouthrinse.
