What is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns are customized restorations that are made to comfortably and snuggly cover and protect the visible surface of damaged teeth that are above the gumline. They can restore lost dental structure and renew patients’ oral health by helping preserve their natural tooth. Crowns are permanently cemented in place so patients can speak, chew, and smile with complete confidence. We often recommend crowns for patients in some of the following situations:
- Repairing a tooth that is severely decayed and damaged.
- Covering a large filling.
- Strengthen a tooth that had root canal therapy.
- Support a fixed bridge to replace missing teeth.
- Be retained by a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.
- Improve the look and shape of worn-down and discolored teeth.
- Repair the shape of a broken tooth in North Central San Antonio.
CEREC Same-Day Crowns
At Legacy Dental SA, our dentists utilize the latest technology that the dental world has to offer, including CEREC computer-assisted design tools and an in-office milling machine. With these, we’re able to drastically cut our patients’ waiting time by crafting customized, high-quality dental crowns in North Central San Antonio in a single appointment. Because everything is completed under our roof to the specifications of our highly experienced dentists, you can expect a precise, accurate, and comfortable dental crown that lasts you for years.
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown
Getting a traditional dental crown require at least two appointments to our office. During the first visit, we will prepare your tooth for the crown by removing a small amount of natural enamel from it. This will allow your dental crown to blend with your smile without protruding from your mouth or affecting your bite. We will then take impressions of your tooth that will be used to make a model to send off to our dental laboratory. We will place a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth until your permanent one arrives.
Once our dental laboratory sends us your customized crown, we will call you in for your second appointment. After removing your temporary crown, we will cement the customized permanent one to your damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, and structure.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Each of our dental crowns is made from high-quality and durable materials that will last you for years with the proper care. Our dentists take the time to match the shape, color, and size of the crown as closely to your natural teeth as possible. That way, once your damaged tooth receives the restoration, it will be virtually indistinguishable and flawlessly blend with your smile.
Damaged teeth can make it difficult to chew food, which is why you’ll notice that with a dental crown, you have extra support and will be able to eat all of your favorite snacks and meals. Lastly, with a strong bond and seal over your broken, decayed, or treated tooth, you won’t have to worry about harmful oral bacteria sneaking their way into the fragile inner structure and causing severe issues like tooth infections.
Caring for Restored Teeth After the Procedure
Once your dental crown has been placed, one of our professionals will walk you through how to take care of it at home and extend its lifespan. The good news is, you won’t need to drastically change your daily routine. It’ll just be important to be mindful of bad oral habits and eating foods that could damage your crown, such as ones that are chewy, sticky, and hard. Be sure to brush, floss, and rinse with antibacterial mouthwash every day as well as visit us for your semi-annual checkups and cleanings. During these regular appointments, we’ll be able to examine your crown for any signs of wear-and-tear and make repairs or replacements as necessary.
Cost of Dental Crowns
The cost of dental crowns in North Central San Antonio can vary dramatically based on factors such as the size and material they’re made from. This makes it difficult to estimate a single price without first having an examination completed by one of our dentists. During your appointment, they’ll lay out a treatment plan for you and discuss payment options along with the cost of your restoration.
